Worlds 100 largest newspapers by circulation

Filed under: Newspapers — Hans Henrik Lichtenberg @ 12:40 am

Infoporn:
Did you ever wonder which newspaper is the largest in the world and where it came from? I love the raw surprising facts (like that the largest company in the world by number of employees is the Indian Railways with a staff of more than 2.000.000..)

One of the things that surprises me here is that Greece has a larger newspaper than United States.

  1. Your numbers for Eleftherotypia in Greece are apparently off by a huge margin, Hans. Folks in this Metafilter thread have noted that you appear to have used *annual* circulation figures or something. Her’s a site that lists Eleftherotypia’s circulation in the Athens area at 28,598 daily and 68,217 Sunday. An error might explain the strangely high ranking.

  2. Hi Todd, yes I saw the discussion at Metafilter. Thanks for the information. I will make a new posting when I have made a new list with the correct information.

Nice site you have by the way!

  6. Just Fyi, your list seems to exclude many Northern European newspapers, for example Helsingin Sanomat (biggest newspaper in Finland) is read by over 800 000 people every weekday and over a million on Sundays. Dagens Nyheter, biggest paper in Sweden has similar numbers. And please noe that Finland only has less than 5.5 million people and Sweden around 9 million.

    Comment by Kaari Jae — June 13, 2005 @ 3:17 am

  7. The lack of Sunday papers skews the table considerably. For instance where’s the London Sunday Times?

    Comment by NP — June 13, 2005 @ 8:14 am

  8. “England” != “UK”

    Comment by salmacis — June 13, 2005 @ 12:14 pm

  9. Just echoing salmacis - please don’t confuse England and the UK, they really aren’t the same thing.

  10. im portuguese. i read newspapers everyday. Diario Insular isn’t our biggest newspaper. Not even close.

    Comment by joana — June 14, 2005 @ 4:41 am

  11. This is off. One of the local newspapers (Le Journal de Montréal) has a circulation which ranges between one to two million units every day.

    Comment by Yan Desjardins — June 14, 2005 @ 3:58 pm

  12. It seems as if this list is based on single editions, instead of conglomerations like The New York Times Co. which owns many other newspapers (The Boston Globe, the International Herald Tribune and regional newspapers), broadcasting stations and digital services. Total revenues in 2003: $3.2 billion.

  13. The Economist recently broke the 1,000,000,000 barrier but seems to be missing. How The Economist made a million
But I guess staples and a glossy coating make it a magazine to most people, rather than a weekly newspaper.

  14. next list: online news-sites & their domestic pageviews. Let’s see wat the result look then, should be interesting.

  15. Good idea interestman. Did you read my post: http://www.newspaperindex.com/blog/2005/04/25/the-worlds-bloggiest-newspaper/
The same thing could be done with the worlds top 100. It is a huge task, but could be done during a weekend. Should we do it together?

  16. would someone be able to let me know what is the best method of getting a story ran in all the largest circlating newspapers that is news worthy the world over.

I have caught out the NSW government covering up crimes against its civilians and have continuously tried to have these injustices resolved to protect more people becoming victims but even our Prime Minister John Howard has been told and has said he can’t help.

Its hypocritical of our Australia government to send troop to Iraq to give them a democracy because their government was committing crimes against its people when its own NSW state government is committing crimes against its citizens and covered up by corrupt politicians who have formed a conspiricy not to investigate these matters and sack all those involved, I even now call this group of politicians FAGS standing for Federation Against Government Sackings.

Please let me know as I’m sure people all over the world would like to know how corrupt our Australian government is.

  17. 1) Similar update list is available in World Press Trends 2005, unfortunately it does not include free dailies. Japonese circulation includes both morning and evening edition
    2) No Greek daily newspaper has circulation over 110k.
    3) It would be non-sense to includes Sunday newspaper > different frequency, not comparable.
    4) The Economist is not a newspapers
    5) Sweden, Finland max circulation is 500k, do not confuse readership and circulation!

    Comment by Wilf — June 22, 2005 @ 3:13 pm

  18. Your figures for Indian newspapers are off by a huge margin. The largest newspaper in India is Dainik Jagran which has a circulation of over 20 million.

  20. […] Meanwhile the internet arm of El Mundo, Spain’s second-best selling daily in print, has the highest readership of all online European papers with 750,000 visitors a day, and is the most read title in the Spanish-speaking world. ‘Digital revenue is serious business … Online business is a growth business, while newspapers are not,’ echoed Helmar Hipp, regional director of Austria’s Voralberger Nachrichten, which draws 15 per cent of its revenue from the internet and related activities. 21. hey folks,

do you know by any chance where i can find a list of the 10 or 5 highest ranking newspaper per country in europe or worldwide?

is there such a list at all?

    Comment by Andrea — December 12, 2005 @ 8:19 pm

  22. Hi, no I have not heard of such a list.

There is a lot of circulation data out there but not compiled like you need them. I guess you have to build your own list in a spreadsheet. - If you do I would like to see it when it is finished :-)

    Best regards
